Thanks so much for the book review. Reading the old fairy tales and nursery rhymes, memorization of poetry all seem to be lost arts.

Our pastor spoke this week on the fact that he doesn't believe in Quality time with children, only Quantity time - then the quality happens. And that's what all of the above is about.

The best way to deal with and to avoid temper tantrums is to remain calm but firm and create immediate, clear consequences for the behavior. As soon as my child started to fight the coat, I would have gotten down to her level and informed her that she had two choices: she could put on her coat or we would go home immediately and she would be forbidden from attending story time for 2 days (or 3 days or a week or whatever will resonate with your child). If a tantrum happens during an event, I inform the child that we will have to leave unless they are able to behave appropriately. Then you must follow through, even if change plans is a huge inconvenience to you, too. Without consistent consequences, children learn how to manipulate their parents via tantrums and other behaviors. I'm saddened by how many parents want to avoid conflict and avoid their children feeling anything negative at the sake of teachable moments and basic parenting.
